OpenAI Signs LOIs With Samsung, SK Hynix
OpenAI signed letters of intent with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to build two “Stargate Korea” data centers and to secure large volumes of DRAM wafers for its global Stargate AI infrastructure. The partners said Stargate’s memory demand could grow to about 900,000 DRAM wafers per month—potentially about 40% of global DRAM output and exceeding current high‑bandwidth memory (HBM) capacity—though who will dice and package the wafers remains unclear. Samsung subsidiaries (SDS, C&T, Heavy Industries) and SK Telecom will collaborate with OpenAI on data‑center design, floating/offshore facilities, deployment and reseller services. Initial Korean builds are planned with modest starter capacity of about 20 megawatts. The LOIs were signed during meetings in Seoul between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, President Lee Jae‑myung and Korean chip executives. Stargate is a multi‑company OpenAI–Oracle–SoftBank initiative to add gigawatts of AI compute across multiple global sites.
