Stanford Daily Sues Over Pro-Palestinian Speech Crackdown

Stanford University's student newspaper, The Stanford Daily, has filed a federal lawsuit against Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, challenging the Trump administration's use of immigration law to target and potentially deport noncitizen students over pro-Palestinian speech related to Israel’s war in Gaza. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is supporting the suit, which claims federal provisions allowing visa revocation or deportation based on protected speech violate the First and Fifth Amendments. Noncitizen writers report both self-censorship and resignations due to fears of government retaliation, particularly avoiding coverage of campus protests. The lawsuit seeks to bar the government from using immigration powers to chill protected speech.
