Hamas Confirms Death of Gaza Military Chief Mohammad Sinwar

Hamas has officially confirmed the death of its Gaza military chief, Mohammad Sinwar, several months after Israel reported killing him in a May airstrike. Sinwar, known as "The Shadow," was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former Hamas leader who co-masterminded the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and was killed in combat a year later. Following Yahya's death, Mohammad Sinwar rose to senior leadership positions within Hamas and was seen as a key military strategist behind major attacks, including the 2023 assault. Hamas released photographs of Sinwar with other commanders, calling them "martyrs," but did not provide details about the circumstances of his death. His death is expected to elevate his close associate Izz al-Din Haddad, currently overseeing northern Gaza operations, to lead Hamas' armed wing across the enclave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously confirmed Sinwar's elimination in targeted strikes to the Israeli parliament.
