Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia is retiring from his position to join Austin City Hall as an assistant city manager overseeing public safety under former Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax. Garcia's new role will involve managing the Austin Police, Fire, and EMS departments, among other public safety responsibilities. His retirement comes less than six months after agreeing to an extension in Dallas through May 2027, which had included retention bonuses and a severance package. Garcia, who has been credited with reducing crime and boosting morale in Dallas since his appointment in 2021, was also sought after by other cities like Houston earlier this year. His departure follows the recent appointment of Lisa Davis as the new Austin Police Chief.
