Ukrainian Drones Suspend Operations at Russia’s Largest Baltic Oil Port
Ukraine conducted a significant drone strike on September 12 targeting Primorsk, Russia's largest oil-loading port on the Baltic Sea, resulting in fires on two Aframax tankers and a pumping station, which led to the suspension of oil shipments from the port for the first time. The port is a critical hub for Russia's oil exports, handling roughly 60 million tons annually and generating about $15 billion, with the disruption potentially costing Russia up to $41 million daily. This strike is part of Kyiv's intensified campaign to cripple Russia's energy infrastructure, including previous attacks on nearby Ust-Luga port and other energy facilities, aiming to cut off Russia's main revenue source amid stalled peace talks. While Russian regional authorities acknowledged the fire damage, they did not confirm the suspension of operations, whereas industry sources and Ukraine's Security Service confirmed the halt in loading activities. The attack also damaged the oil pipeline system connecting to Ust-Luga port, further limiting Russia's export capacity. This escalation highlights the strategic use of drone warfare by Ukraine to pressure Russia economically and politically in the ongoing conflict.
