Australia Recognises Palestinian State at UN Amid Gaza War

Australia announced it will formally recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese describing a two-state solution as humanity's best hope to end the conflict and suffering in Gaza. This decision follows assurances from the Palestinian Authority, including commitments to demilitarisation, democratic elections, recognition of Israel's right to exist, and exclusion of Hamas from any future Palestinian government. Australia joins over 140 countries, including France, the UK, and Canada, in recognising Palestinian statehood, amid growing international momentum and increased criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza. Albanese criticised the Israeli government's defiance of international law and denial of sufficient humanitarian aid, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Australia's move as a "shameful" reward for Hamas's October 7 attacks. New Zealand is also considering recognition, emphasizing an independent foreign policy and the need for progress toward a viable Palestinian state. The Australian Jewish community expressed concern that this recognition departs from the traditional bipartisan approach linking Palestinian statehood to a comprehensive peace agreement.
