J&J Plans $2B Manufacturing Expansion North Carolina Amid Tariff Threats
Johnson & Johnson announced a $2 billion investment to expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint through a 10-year agreement with Fujifilm Diosynth to utilize a 160,000-square-foot facility in Holly Springs, North Carolina, creating approximately 120 new jobs. This investment is part of J&J's broader $55 billion U.S. expansion plan announced earlier in 2025, aimed at bolstering manufacturing, research, and development. The move aligns with similar commitments from other pharmaceutical companies like Regeneron, which signed a $3 billion deal for manufacturing space at the same site, and Eli Lilly, amid growing pressure from President Donald Trump's administration to reshore drug production and counter proposed import tariffs. Trump has indicated phased tariffs on pharmaceutical imports could reach up to 250%, with a current 15% tariff on EU-made innovative drugs confirmed through a trade deal. The administration's ongoing Section 232 investigation into pharma imports further motivates these domestic investments. J&J also plans to announce additional manufacturing expansions in the U.S., including ongoing construction of a biologics plant in Wilson, North Carolina.
