Yemen Houthis Escalate Threats on Israel-Linked Shipping

The Yemen-based Houthi rebel group has announced an escalation in its military campaign against Israel, declaring the start of a fourth phase targeting all commercial ships associated with Israeli ports, regardless of the vessels' nationality or destination. This move is part of their broader response to Israel's offensive in Gaza, with the Houthis positioning their attacks as acts of solidarity with the Palestinian people. The group has carried out over 100 attacks on ships in the Red Sea since late 2023, including the sinking of two Greek-owned bulk carriers, resulting in casualties and captives. Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in May that halted airstrikes and attacks on international shipping, the Houthis clarified that vessels linked to Israel remain legitimate targets.
