Nationwide Boycott Targets Target, Amazon, Walmart Over DEI Policies
A wave of consumer boycotts is currently targeting major retailers, primarily Amazon and Target, in response to perceived corporate greed and rollbacks of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. John Schwarz, founder of The People's Union, organized a 24-hour economic blackout on February 28, which saw a reported 6% drop in traffic at top e-commerce sites, although Amazon's sales remained stable. Following this, a 40-day boycott of Target was initiated by Atlanta Pastor Jamal Bryant, who criticized the retailer for not fulfilling a $2 billion investment commitment to Black-owned businesses. This boycott coincides with Lent and targets Target specifically due to its headquarters in Minneapolis, the site of George Floyd's death. Activists are also planning additional boycotts against Walmart, Nestle, and other corporations as they continue to push back against the rollback of DEI policies. The momentum for these movements highlights a growing frustration among consumers over corporate accountability in social issues.
