Alaska Gov Dunleavy Appoints Former US Attorney Stephen Cox

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has appointed Stephen J. Cox as the new state Attorney General, effective August 29, 2025. Cox brings extensive experience from his prior roles as a senior U.S. Department of Justice official under President Donald Trump, a U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, and a legal leader in the private sector, including his recent position as Senior Vice President and Chief Legal and Strategy Officer at Bristol Bay Industrial. Governor Dunleavy praised Cox's dedication to the rule of law and his leadership on complex legal and resource development projects that benefit Alaska Native shareholders. Cox, who moved to Anchorage in 2021, is also active in the local community through his involvement with a classical school and church activities. He expressed his commitment to uphold justice, protect Alaskans' rights, and enforce state laws with integrity. Cox’s appointment will be subject to confirmation by the Alaska Legislature in 2026.
