Reza Valizadeh's Detention Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions

Reza Valizadeh, an Iranian-American journalist who worked for Radio Farda, a U.S.-funded broadcaster, has been detained in Iran for several months, the U.S. State Department confirmed. Valizadeh returned to Iran in March 2024 without security guarantees after posting about unfinished negotiations with Iran's intelligence department. Initially detained and released upon his return, Valizadeh was later rearrested and sent to Evin Prison, with his case expected to be heard in Iran's Revolutionary Court. His detention coincides with heightened tensions, as Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has threatened retaliation against the U.S. and Israel following Israeli strikes and the deployment of U.S. B-52 bombers to the Middle East.
