Federal Judges Block Key Parts of Biden's SAVE Student Loan Forgiveness Plan

Federal judges in Kansas and Missouri have issued preliminary injunctions halting key parts of President Biden’s Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) student loan forgiveness plan. The rulings block measures that would lower monthly payments and forgive loans for borrowers, arguing that such actions exceed the authority of the executive branch and require congressional approval. The Kansas ruling limits forgiveness to borrowers with $12,000 or less, while the Missouri ruling prevents further loan forgiveness altogether. The Biden administration, which has already provided nearly $150 billion in relief through executive actions, vows to continue defending the plan. Republican-led states filed the lawsuits, claiming the plan’s cost would unfairly burden taxpayers. This latest setback follows the Supreme Court's earlier decision to strike down a broader student debt relief initiative.
