Israel Intercepts Gaza Flotilla; Mass Protests Follow
Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud flotilla of about 41 ships that sailed from Barcelona carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, detaining hundreds of activists; Israel said the detainees are safe, called the mission a provocation, warned the boats were approaching an active combat zone, and said those apprehended will be deported. Organizers said the convoy was a peaceful challenge to Israel’s naval blockade and the interception has triggered widespread international protests and strikes. Among those detained were high‑profile activists and 16 Irish citizens, prompting large demonstrations in Dublin and across Europe and beyond. In Italy, a nation‑wide strike led mainly by the CGIL paralysed transport, ports and services and drew tens of thousands as protesters demanded cuts to military ties, sanctions on Israel and recognition of Palestinian statehood. Rome said it will not recognise Palestinian statehood until hostages are released and Hamas is out of power, while British authorities urged pro‑Palestine rallies to postpone after the Manchester synagogue attack but many events were due to proceed. Protests have also spread to other countries including India and France, and governmental and rights‑group reactions have ranged from condemnation of the interception to expulsions of diplomats and accusations of terrorism.
