An article by Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic has sparked controversy by alleging that former President Donald Trump made disparaging remarks about slain Army specialist Vanessa Guillen's ethnicity and refused to pay for her funeral expenses. The report claims Trump reacted with anger at the $60,000 funeral cost during a December 2020 Oval Office meeting, reportedly stating, 'It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a f—king Mexican.' However, Guillen's sister, Mayra, and family attorney Natalie Khawam vehemently dismissed these claims as false and politically motivated, asserting that Trump had treated their family with respect and offered assistance. Khawam accused Goldberg of exploiting Guillen's murder for political gain and called the timing of the article suspicious, given the supposed events took place four years prior. Senior Trump administration officials, including Mark Meadows, also refuted the claims, stating that any suggestion Trump disparaged Guillen or refused to help is absolutely false. Mayra Guillen emphasized that her sister's death should not be politicized and expressed her continued support for Trump.
