The FCC has fined Lingo Telecom $1 million for transmitting AI-generated deepfake robocalls that mimicked President Joe Biden's voice, aimed at misleading New Hampshire voters during the January primary. This action follows an initial proposed penalty of $2 million, reduced through a settlement. The robocalls, organized by political consultant Steve Kramer, falsely suggested that voting in the primary would bar participation in the general election. Kramer, who faces a $6 million fine and criminal charges, allegedly used AI technology to create the fake Biden voice. Lingo Telecom has also agreed to implement stringent caller ID authentication measures to prevent future incidents. FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the need for transparency and the identification of AI use in communications.
