Mexican President Proposes Renaming North America

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum humorously proposed renaming North America 'Mexican America' during a press conference, in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America'. Sheinbaum showcased a 1607 map that depicted the historic name, asserting that 'Mexican America' has been recognized since the 17th century. Former culture minister Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real supported her claim, emphasizing the long-standing international recognition of the Gulf of Mexico's name in maritime navigation. Sheinbaum also refuted Trump's assertion that Mexico is 'run by cartels', asserting that the country is governed by its people and addressing security issues. Despite the recent tensions, she expressed optimism for a positive future relationship between the two nations.
