South Africa Seeks Extension of US Tariff Pause Before July Deadline
South Africa has formally requested an extension of the U.S. 90-day tariff pause, which is set to expire on July 9, to allow more time for trade negotiations with President Donald Trump's administration. The tariffs, initially imposed at 31% in April as part of Trump's global 'reciprocal tariffs' policy, target key South African exports like vehicles, auto parts, steel, and aluminum. South Africa is seeking a trade deal that would exempt these critical exports while offering to import liquefied natural gas from the U.S. as part of the negotiations. South African officials recently met with U.S. Assistant Trade Representative for Africa Connie Hamilton and learned that the U.S. is developing a new trade framework template for engagements with African nations, which South Africa and others want to align with before finalizing agreements. The South African government has urged its industry to exercise strategic patience as negotiations continue, highlighting the importance of preserving jobs and market access amid strained bilateral relations. President Cyril Ramaphosa initially presented the proposed deal during a May White House visit, which included tense exchanges but subsequent constructive discussions.
