European Parliament Rejects Debate on Trump Assassination

The European Parliament rejected a proposal from the Patriots for Europe group to debate the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump and escalating political violence in Europe. Despite efforts by the populist group spearheaded by Viktor Orbán, the proposal was overwhelmingly dismissed with 337 votes against. Patriots for Europe, the third-largest group in the European Parliament, faced criticism from traditional political groups like the European People's Party, Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe, the Greens, and Left, who refused to engage in the debate due to the cordon sanitaire policy against far-right forces. This rejection sparked outrage among the Patriots members, who viewed it as selective outrage over violence against patriotic politicians and an affront to democratic principles.
