Mexico to Launch App for Detained Migrants

Mexico is set to launch a mobile application that features a 'panic button' for its citizens living in the U.S. illegally, allowing them to alert nearby consulates and family members if they are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The app aims to support the approximately 4.8 million undocumented Mexican migrants in response to President-elect Donald Trump's anticipated mass deportation plan, which targets illegal immigrants, especially those with criminal records. Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente announced that the app will roll out in January, alongside a 24-hour call center for migrant inquiries. President Claudia Sheinbaum has emphasized the importance of community engagement, reassuring migrants that they will not be alone during this process. The Mexican government is also preparing shelters for deported citizens and encouraging them to register with consulates to receive legal protection. However, there is ongoing confusion regarding Mexico's immigration policies amid claims from Trump about cooperation to curb migration.
