Netherlands Rules Out Palestinian State Recognition amid Gaza Conflict, Warns Israel Security Risk
The Netherlands has ruled out recognising a Palestinian state at this time, despite increasing public concern over the conflict in Gaza and protests calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid. Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp emphasized that Israel's military actions are eroding its own security and identity, and noted that the Netherlands has imposed travel bans on two Israeli ministers but will not halt arms imports from Israel, prioritizing EU and domestic procurement instead. This stance contrasts with NATO allies such as France, which plans to recognise Palestinian statehood in September, and Britain, which has indicated it may follow suit unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire and alleviates suffering in Gaza. Similarly, Lithuania has ruled out recognising Palestine, with a top adviser to President Gitanas Nausėda stressing the strategic importance of maintaining diplomatic and defense ties with Israel while advocating for respect for international law and humanitarian access in Gaza. Finland's Constitutional Law Committee Chair also stated there is no legal obligation for the Finnish Parliament to approve recognition of Palestine, suggesting such decisions do not require parliamentary involvement. These positions reflect a cautious approach among some European nations amid the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
