Hostage Talks Stall as Israel, Hamas Remain Divided
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met with families of hostages held by Hamas, reaffirming the government's commitment to securing the return of all captives, both living and dead. Netanyahu recently visited northern Gaza to receive updates on military efforts aimed at freeing the hostages and reiterated Israel's broader war goals, including the release of the 59 hostages still held by Hamas. Negotiations have stalled over phased releases, with Israel lowering its demand to 10 hostages in exchange for an extended ceasefire, while Hamas most recently offered to release five. Families of hostages have voiced concerns about phased releases, fearing some loved ones may not be included. Netanyahu acknowledged that Hamas alone determines which hostages are freed in each agreement. The crisis, now in its 18th month, continues amid ongoing military operations and diplomatic efforts.
