Chinese state-sponsored hackers have breached several U.S. telecommunications companies in a significant cyber espionage campaign, targeting both customer call records and the private communications of individuals in government and politics. The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) confirmed the breach, noting that the hackers accessed networks to steal data that included information subject to U.S. law enforcement requests. This intrusion, reportedly involving about ten telecom providers like Verizon and AT&T, is one of the most serious in recent memory, with tens of millions of American cellular records potentially accessed. The agencies are providing technical assistance to affected entities and encouraging potential victims to report incidents. The cyberattacks are linked to a group known as Salt Typhoon and have raised substantial national security concerns, with further investigation expected to reveal more details. Chinese embassy officials have not responded to requests for comment on these allegations.
