Three Democrats Withdraw Support for Trump Impeachment Resolution
A recent effort by Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar to impeach President Donald Trump quickly lost momentum as three initial co-sponsors—Reps. Kweisi Mfume, Robin Kelly, and Jerry Nadler—requested to have their names removed after discovering the resolution had not been vetted by party leadership. The impeachment resolution included seven articles alleging various constitutional violations, but Democratic leaders expressed little interest in pursuing the measure, citing past failed attempts and the current Republican control of Congress. Spokespersons for the withdrawn co-sponsors emphasized their initial assumption that the resolution had leadership approval, prompting their reversal when this was found to be untrue. Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar reiterated that another impeachment is unlikely, as they do not expect Republican cooperation or conviction. Despite dwindling support, Thanedar remains committed to advancing the resolution, while Rep. Jan Schakowsky is now the only co-sponsor. This episode reflects broader Democratic skepticism about the effectiveness of impeachment as a strategy against Trump under current political circumstances.
