Israeli Drones Drop Grenades Near UNIFIL Peacekeepers Lebanon
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that Israeli drones dropped four grenades near peacekeepers who were clearing roadblocks hindering access to a UN position, describing it as one of the most serious attacks on its personnel since the November ceasefire. One grenade landed within 20 meters and three within approximately 100 meters of UN personnel and vehicles, with the drones observed returning south of the Blue Line. UNIFIL condemned the attack as a violation of the 2006 UN Security Council resolution that underpins the ceasefire and stressed that endangering peacekeepers' lives is unacceptable under international law. The incident highlights the fragile peace in the region and raises concerns about the safety of peacekeepers in volatile areas. The UN Security Council recently voted to extend UNIFIL's mandate for a final time until 2027 amid pressure from Israel and its US ally to end the nearly 50-year-old force. Israel welcomed the mandate's upcoming termination and urged Lebanon to assert full authority over its territory following its military campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah.
