Panama Files Criminal Complaint Against CK Hutchison Over Port Deal

Panama has initiated a criminal investigation into CK Hutchison, a Hong Kong-based company operating two significant ports in the country, following allegations of contractual breaches and financial misconduct. Comptroller General Anel Flores reported that an audit revealed CK Hutchison owed the government over $300 million due to payment defaults and irregularities in the renewal of a 25-year concession contract. The investigation comes as a $19 billion deal for CK Hutchison's port business, including the Panama ports, is being scrutinized amid geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and China. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's visit coincided with these developments, highlighting the strategic importance of the Panama Canal. The Panamanian government asserts its sovereignty over the canal, despite concerns from the U.S. regarding Chinese influence.
