US Lawmakers Propose Drug Testing Bill for Musk, DOGE Team

Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey has introduced the Drug Testing for Special Government Employees Act, which would require Elon Musk and staff at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to undergo drug testing. Sherrill's concerns arise from allegations of Musk's past drug use, including LSD and cocaine, as reported by a January 2024 Wall Street Journal investigation. The proposed legislation mandates that special government employees pass a drug test before their employment and face regular screenings, with a positive test resulting in a minimum one-year ban from federal service. Despite the bill's intentions, it faces significant hurdles in the Republican-controlled legislature. Musk's attorney stated that he is regularly tested at SpaceX and has never failed a drug test. Sherrill emphasized the importance of thorough vetting for individuals with access to sensitive information, linking the proposal to national security concerns.
