Greenland's Prime Minister Rejects Sale Proposal

Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede reaffirmed that the island is not for sale in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's recent comments about the necessity of U.S. ownership and control over Greenland for national security. Egede stated, 'Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale,' emphasizing the importance of their struggle for freedom. Trump's remarks echo his 2019 proposal to buy Greenland, which was rejected by both Denmark and Greenlandic authorities, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen previously calling the notion 'absurd.' Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, is strategically significant for U.S. military operations due to its Pituffik air base. Aaja Chemnitz, a member of the Greenlandic parliament, criticized Trump's comments as disrespectful, asserting that any decision regarding Greenland's status lies with its people, not Denmark. While there is no intention to sell, Chemnitz acknowledged the desire for enhanced cooperation with the U.S., evidenced by the recent establishment of a U.S. consulate in Greenland.
