WattEV Builds Three Megawatt EV Truck Charging Depots California
The rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the U.S. shows mixed progress, with local initiatives like Clinton, Mississippi adding 12 new charging stations offering up to 25 miles of range per hour. However, a federal infrastructure program under President Donald Trump's administration has resulted in fewer than 400 charging ports built across 16 states, with criticism over lack of clear performance goals and a suspension of the program pending review. Trump has also taken steps to end EV tax credits and rescinded policies promoting EV sales. In California, heavy-duty EV charging infrastructure is advancing rapidly through WattEV's development of three new megawatt charging depots at Otay Mesa, Baker, and the Port of Long Beach, supported by over $24 million in state grants. These depots will feature the next-generation Megawatt Charging System, reducing electric truck charging times to 30 minutes, comparable to diesel refueling, and incorporate advanced technologies like silicon carbide power rectifiers and solid-state transformers to cut costs and complexity. WattEV aims to support the freight sector's transition to zero emissions with a goal of deploying 12,000 electric trucks in California by 2030, positioning 2026 as a pivotal year for freight electrification.
