Greenland's New PM Rejects Trump's Control Claims

Following Greenland's parliamentary elections, newly elected Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen of the Demokraatit party firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's claims about potentially annexing the island, stating, 'We don’t want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.' The election results, which saw the Demokraatit party favoring a gradual path to independence, signal a strong preference among Greenlanders for self-determination amid Trump's ongoing rhetoric regarding U.S. control of the territory. Nielsen emphasized that Greenland's future should be decided by its residents, not external pressures, while Trump had previously stated that acquiring Greenland was a priority for national security. The island, rich in natural resources and strategically located, has been on a path toward increased autonomy since 2009, with most parties in the recent elections supporting independence in principle. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the election outcome, reflecting Denmark's commitment to not opposing Greenland's aspirations for independence.
