Social Security Administration Delays Phone Service Cuts Amid Backlash
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has delayed the implementation of controversial cuts to phone services for beneficiaries, responding to significant backlash from advocacy groups and lawmakers. Initially set to take effect soon, the new policy would have required many applicants for benefits to verify their identity online or in person, rather than over the phone, a move criticized for potentially disenfranchising vulnerable groups, including the elderly and disabled. Starting April 14, 2025, individuals applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income will still be able to complete their claims over the phone, while other benefits will require online or in-person verification. Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek acknowledged the agency's commitment to improving customer service and addressing concerns from the public and advocacy organizations like AARP, which highlighted the burden the changes could impose on certain populations. The SSA's rapid policy shifts, influenced by efforts to reduce staff and combat fraud, have led to confusion and anxiety among beneficiaries. The agency has pledged to develop a more suitable solution that balances security with accessibility for all applicants.
