Nazi art returned to owners
A drawing by Egon Schiele, titled 'Seated Nude Woman, front view', stolen from Austrian-Jewish cabaret performer Fritz Grünbaum by the Nazis, has been returned to his family by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The artwork was acquired by the Papanek family, who fled Austria in 1938 and were unaware of its stolen status. At a ceremony, both families expressed their gratitude and reflected on the significance of the return, with Timothy Reif, a relative of Grünbaum, emphasizing the moral and ethical dimensions of the restitution. This marks the eleventh Schiele artwork returned to Grünbaum's family, highlighting ongoing efforts to rectify the injustices of Nazi-era looting. The DA's office has returned multiple artworks recently, underscoring the continued impact of Nazi crimes on survivors and their descendants. The Grünbaum family plans to use proceeds from the artwork to support underprivileged artists through their foundation.
