Harvard Nears $500 Million Settlement With Trump Administration Restoring Funding
Harvard University and the Trump administration are close to finalizing a landmark legal settlement in which Harvard would agree to spend $500 million on vocational and educational programs in exchange for the restoration of billions of dollars in federal research funding. The proposed figure meets President Trump's demand that Harvard spend more than double what Columbia University agreed to pay, while also satisfying Harvard's preference to avoid direct payments to the government. The deal would also require Harvard to continue efforts to combat antisemitism on campus and would end multiple investigations launched by the Trump administration, including those from the Justice and Commerce Departments. Additionally, the settlement would halt the administration's attempts to block Harvard from enrolling thousands of international students. Despite significant progress, the agreement remains subject to final approval by President Trump and senior Harvard officials, with ongoing discussions about the precise terms. This settlement would conclude a months-long dispute that began when President Trump threatened to freeze up to $2.3 billion in funding over Harvard's refusal to meet certain policy demands related to campus protests, diversity programs, and admissions practices.
