South Dakota Public Broadcasting Cuts 25% Workforce Amid $2.2M Federal Funding Loss

The rescission of funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), enacted under President Donald Trump's administration and supported by South Dakota's congressional delegation, accounts for about 20% of SDPB's budget and forced the elimination of local journalism programs including the radio show 'In the Moment' and the TV show 'South Dakota Focus,' as well as cutbacks to educational resources and the program 'Dakota Life.' Executive Director Julie Overgaard expressed deep regret, emphasizing the decision reflects financial necessity rather than staff performance, while SDPB continues to prioritize key broadcasts such as legislative coverage and athletic events. Despite the severity of the cuts, there is cautious optimism as the Friends of SDPB have raised about half the needed funds to mitigate the impact, and Overgaard encouraged local community support to help sustain the organization. The affected South Dakota lawmakers who voted for the rescission have acknowledged the consequences but have not committed to advocating for restoration of funds.
