ICC Confirms Ongoing War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity in Sudan, Darfur
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has found reasonable grounds to believe that war crimes and crimes against humanity are ongoing in Sudan's western Darfur region amid the prolonged conflict since 2023. ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan reported to the United Nations Security Council that the humanitarian crisis in Darfur has reached an intolerable state, with escalating famine, targeted attacks on hospitals and humanitarian convoys, and widespread use of sexual violence and abductions as weapons of war. The conflict involves Sudan's Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with both sides accused of committing serious violations, including possible genocide as determined by the Biden administration. The situation has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people, many fleeing to neighboring countries. ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, currently on temporary leave due to unrelated allegations, had previously confirmed grounds for these serious accusations against both parties. The ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis underline the urgent need for international attention and action to address the atrocities in Darfur.
