Warm Start to Autumn, Dense Fog and Storms
The first full week of autumn brings a temporary return of summer-like warmth across much of the U.S., with highs generally in the 70s in northern areas and 80s–90s in the South. Morning low clouds and widespread dense fog are likely today, prompting Dense Fog Advisories and reduced visibility that could slow commutes. A cold front and associated storm system will trigger showers and scattered thunderstorms midweek, with parts of the WTOK region at risk for severe storms producing damaging winds, hail, and locally 1–2+ inches of rain; other areas should expect more isolated or marginal storms and overnight showers. Coastal areas will see increased swell from distant Hurricane Gabrielle but limited major erosion is expected. High pressure moves in by late week, bringing drier, sunnier and more fall-like conditions for many regions over the weekend. Autumn officially began Monday at 11:19 a.m. with the autumnal equinox.
