India's Exports Grow 5.2% to $346 Billion Despite US Tariffs

Despite facing significant tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on various Indian exports, including pharmaceuticals, textiles, gems, jewelry, seafood, and machinery, India has demonstrated resilience by adapting its trade policies and simplifying its Goods and Services Tax (GST) to stimulate domestic demand and export production. India's exports grew by 5.19% year-on-year between April and August 2025, reaching $346.1 billion, building on a 7.1% growth in 2024 that surpassed the global average. This growth reflects India's competitiveness, diversification, and resilience, with strong performance in both high-tech electronics and traditional products like tea and textiles, supported by innovation, strategic reforms, and expanding trade partnerships. Exports now contribute 21.2% to India's GDP, up from 19.8% in 2015, indicating their growing economic significance, with the government targeting $1 trillion in exports for fiscal year 2025-26. Key sectors such as engineering goods, electronics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals have shown notable gains, bolstered by initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) and Make in India schemes that have shifted India from a net importer to a net exporter of electronic goods. This export growth, despite global uncertainties and trade challenges, is credited to the synergy of government policy, digital transformation, and the entrepreneurial dynamism of Indian exporters advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat on a global scale.
