States Investigate AAP's Transgender Treatment Guidelines

A coalition of 20 Republican attorneys general, led by Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador, is investigating the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) over claims that puberty blockers for transgender minors are 'reversible.' The AGs argue that this assertion misleads the public and may violate state consumer protection laws, emphasizing that recent studies, including the Cass report, indicate potential long-term harms from these treatments. The letter demands a retraction from the AAP and seeks clarification on its relationship with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which has faced scrutiny for its guidelines. The attorneys general express concern over the medical community's adherence to the principle of 'do no harm,' claiming that current practices may constitute 'medical experimentation' on children. They highlight that many countries are moving away from such treatments, and the AAP's recommendations could put children's health at risk. The AAP has not yet responded to the allegations.
