DuPage Sheriff Mendrick launches 2026 Illinois gubernatorial bid

DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick has announced his candidacy for the Illinois governor's race in 2026, forgoing a third term as sheriff. Frustrated by what he describes as 'radical' changes in the state's criminal justice system, particularly the SAFE-T Act which eliminated cash bail, Mendrick aims to address rising crime rates and the perceived leniency towards offenders. He criticized current Governor JB Pritzker's policies, stating they undermine public safety and hinder rehabilitation efforts for offenders. In a Facebook post, Mendrick emphasized his commitment to restoring safety and security in Illinois, asserting that his family wants their state back and expressing concern over crime affecting daily life. He is the first official candidate to enter the race, and plans to support his undersheriff as his successor. Pritzker has not yet confirmed whether he will seek re-election in 2026.
