India Surpasses China as Top US Smartphone Manufacturer Led by Apple
India has surpassed China as the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones shipped to the United States, driven primarily by Apple's accelerated shift of iPhone production to India amid ongoing trade tensions and tariff risks under President Donald Trump's policies. In the second quarter of 2025, India accounted for 44% of smartphones shipped to the US, up dramatically from 13% the previous year, while China's share fell from 61% to 25%. Apple has tripled its production volumes in India, with over 75% of iPhones sold in the US now made there, although the company still relies on Chinese facilities for scaled production. Despite this supply chain shift and a strong first quarter, Apple experienced an 11% year-over-year decline in iPhone shipments to the US in Q2 2025, reflecting subdued consumer demand, economic pressures, and competition in lower market segments. Samsung and Motorola are also moving some US-bound production to India and Vietnam, but not as extensively as Apple. The overall US smartphone market growth remains weak, and while Apple has pledged significant investment and hiring in the US, most iPhones sold there are currently not manufactured domestically.
