Sona College Leads Sustainable Fashion Innovation, Textile Research

The Department of Fashion Technology at Salem-based Sona College of Technology is emerging as a leader in sustainable fashion innovation, textile research, and skill development amid India's rise as a global apparel sourcing hub. Their philosophy, “From Loom to Label,” ensures students gain comprehensive expertise from fabric manufacturing to advanced design and fashion technology. The department is involved in over six research projects focusing on advanced technical textiles, assistive textiles for differently-abled women, cotton waste upcycling, and loom waste minimization, supported by significant funding from national bodies. Notably, the FIBRE project with international partners, including the University of Toronto, explores wearable smart textiles for healthcare. The NBA-accredited BTech program emphasizes experiential learning through internships and industrial visits, with a curriculum covering Fashion Design, CAD, Sustainable Textiles, and 3D Virtual Fitting, taught by faculty holding advanced degrees.
