Fourteen attorneys general from states including New York, California, and New Jersey have filed lawsuits against TikTok, alleging it has addicted young users and collected their data without consent, in violation of state laws. The lawsuits claim TikTok's platform is designed to be addictive, harming children's mental health, and misleadingly marketed as safe for young users. The legal action accuses TikTok of promoting dangerous challenges and illegally collecting data from minors, with demands for financial penalties. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin emphasized TikTok's knowledge of its harmful effects but alleged refusal to mitigate them. Additionally, Washington D.C. accused TikTok of running an unlicensed virtual currency system and likened its live-stream feature to a 'virtual strip club' for teenagers. TikTok has not responded to requests for comments on these lawsuits.
