Singapore Plans to Acquire Four Boeing Maritime Patrol Aircraft
Singapore has announced the acquisition of four Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft as part of the first phase of upgrading its maritime security capabilities, replacing the ageing Fokker 50 fleet that has been in service since 1993. Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing disclosed this during a meeting with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon, emphasizing the importance of strengthening maritime situational awareness and countering sub-surface threats. The P-8A, a modified Boeing 737-800, is operated by several countries and is capable of anti-submarine warfare with advanced detection and weaponry systems. This acquisition aligns with Singapore’s broader naval modernization efforts, including the introduction of Invincible-class submarines, multi-role combat vessels, offshore patrol vessels, and upgrades to existing frigates. Additionally, Singapore confirmed that production of its 20 F-35 fighter jets has begun, with deliveries expected from the end of 2026. The discussions also reaffirmed the longstanding bilateral defense relationship between Singapore and the US and Singapore's support for continued US engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.
