ICE Expands Largest Detention Centers in Georgia, Texas, Indiana
The Trump administration is significantly expanding immigration detention capacity across multiple states as part of its hard-line immigration crackdown. In Georgia, Charlton County approved a nearly $50 million expansion of the Folkston ICE Processing Center, which will become the largest ICE facility in the country, increasing its capacity from 1,100 to nearly 3,000 detainees despite prior reports of substandard conditions and detainee deaths. Similarly, Indiana is partnering with ICE to convert the Miami Correctional Facility into a detention center nicknamed the “Speedway Slammer,” with up to 1,000 beds to house undocumented immigrants. Meanwhile, the largest facility under construction is at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, designed to hold 5,000 detainees, with phased expansions underway, although details remain tightly controlled by the government. Additionally, the Justice Department recently released a revised list of sanctuary jurisdictions, reflecting ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local policies. These developments underscore the administration's push to expand detention infrastructure amid growing criticism over the treatment and conditions within these facilities.
