Denmark Summons US Envoy Over Alleged Covert Operations In Greenland
Denmark has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen following reports that at least three U.S. citizens connected to President Donald Trump were conducting covert operations in Greenland to promote its secession from Denmark and eventual annexation by the United States. Danish authorities and intelligence services have expressed serious concern over these activities, which allegedly include infiltrating Greenlandic society, compiling lists of locals based on their stance toward U.S. influence, and attempting to foster divisions between Greenland and Denmark. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have condemned any interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark as unacceptable and emphasized Denmark's commitment to protecting Greenland's sovereignty. These developments come amid President Trump's repeated declarations of interest in acquiring Greenland for strategic and economic reasons, including its location and mineral wealth, and his stated willingness to use force if necessary. Vice President JD Vance's recent visit to Greenland, intended to improve relations, was met with protests and further heightened tensions. Denmark, a NATO and EU member, has stressed Greenland's integral role within the Kingdom and called for respect of its autonomy, while warning against external influence campaigns designed to sow discord.
