Germany Deploys Brigade to Bolster NATO Eastern Flank in Lithuania

Germany has deployed its first permanent military brigade abroad since World War II, stationing the 45th Armoured Brigade in Lithuania to strengthen NATO's eastern flank against Russia. Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of defending Baltic allies, stating that "protecting Vilnius is protecting Berlin," and called on NATO members to increase defense spending, aiming for 3.5% of GDP by 2032. The brigade, comprised of approximately 4,800 troops and 200 civilian staff, will be fully operational by 2027 and is part of Germany's broader security policy shift known as the "Zeitenwende" in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda welcomed the move as a historic step of trust and responsibility, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by Russia and Belarus near the Baltic states. Merz also stressed the need for Europe to enhance its defense capabilities and industry, working closely with NATO allies and the United States.
