Majority Ukrainians Support Peace Talks Amid Russia Negotiation Delays
A recent poll shows that 59% of Ukrainians support ceasing hostilities and seeking a negotiated compromise, while 33% favor continuing the fight. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that Ukraine is ready for real negotiations at the leaders' level, but Russia continues to prolong the conflict and evade talks, particularly during President Putin's visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Zelenskyy highlighted broad international support for ending the war, with backing from countries including China, India, Turkey, and the Vatican, urging sustained pressure on Russia from the US, Europe, and G20 nations. He warned that Russia's refusal to engage constructively in peace talks only destabilizes global processes and insisted that Moscow must be held accountable. Meanwhile, President Trump stated that a trilateral summit involving himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy will eventually take place but suggested the war might need to continue for a while longer before such a meeting can occur, citing ongoing hostilities and Russia’s reluctance. Trump also criticized Russia’s attempts to delay meaningful peace negotiations by proposing talks at lower official levels rather than direct leader meetings.
