DC Mayor Bowser Acknowledges Federal Crime Surge Reduced Violent Crime
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat who initially criticized President Donald Trump's federal takeover of the city’s law enforcement, has acknowledged the success of the federal surge in reducing crime. Since the deployment of National Guard troops and federal oversight of the Metropolitan Police Department, carjackings have dropped by 87%, homicides by 38%, and robberies by 62%, contributing to an overall 15% decline in crime during the period compared to last year. Bowser credited the influx of FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Park Police, and Capitol Police officers for enhanced accountability, increased illegal gun seizures, and safer neighborhoods. Despite praising the partnership, some local Democrats strongly oppose the federal intervention, expressing concerns about loss of autonomy and community trust. Bowser also noted a break in trust between police and community, especially with new federal partners, and uncertainty remains about extending federal oversight beyond the initial 30 days without congressional approval. The crime reduction has sparked political debate, with some critics reluctant to accept the effectiveness of Trump’s measures due to political differences.
