China Probes Mexico Tariffs, Pecan Imports
China’s Ministry of Commerce has opened a formal probe into Mexico’s proposed tariff increases—some as high as 50%—covering more than 1,400 products including cars, auto parts, textiles, toys and household appliances. MOFCOM said the investigation was launched under China’s Foreign Trade Law and MOFCOM rules and will also examine other trade and investment restrictions Mexico has imposed in recent years; officials said it would be conducted with impartiality, fairness and transparency. Separately, China initiated an anti-dumping investigation into pecans from the United States and Mexico, alleging they were sold in China below normal value and caused material injury; that probe is due to conclude in six months with the possibility of extension. Beijing framed the actions as opposing “unilateralism and protectionism” and warned Mexico’s measures could undermine its business environment and investor confidence, while Mexico’s government, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, has denied the tariffs are the result of U.S. pressure. It remains unclear whether the investigations will lead to concrete retaliatory measures; findings could instead prompt consultations or multilateral settlement.
