Boeing Cuts Widebody Demand Forecast Amid Supply Delays
Boeing's 2025 Commercial Market Outlook forecasts demand for 43,600 new commercial aircraft over the next 20 years, a slight decrease from last year's 43,975, primarily due to a 3% reduction in widebody aircraft demand reflecting a slower post-pandemic recovery and geopolitical risks. The forecast predicts 33,285 single-aisle jets, 7,815 widebodies, 1,545 regional jets, and 955 freighters, with the global fleet expected to grow at an annual rate of 3.1% through 2044. Airbus projects similar growth, anticipating 43,400 new aircraft deliveries through 2044, including 34,250 single-aisle and 9,170 widebody jets, driven by a 3.6% annual increase in passenger traffic and the global middle class expansion. Both manufacturers highlight replacement demand for older aircraft as a key factor alongside capacity growth, amidst ongoing supply chain constraints impacting production rates. In May 2025, Airbus delivered 51 aircraft, while Boeing delivered 45, with Boeing achieving a significant widebody order from Qatar Airways and resuming 737 MAX deliveries to China, signaling recovery despite flat delivery numbers and supply challenges. Widebody aircraft production remains a challenge for both companies, with Airbus adjusting its A350 production targets due to component shortages and Boeing noting long-haul travel's sensitivity to external factors in its demand adjustments.
