DHS Sec. Noem Announces U.S.-Mexico Border Wall to Be Painted Black
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that the entire U.S.-Mexico border wall will be painted black at the specific request of President Donald Trump, aiming to make the metal hotter and thus more difficult to climb. Noem explained that painting the wall black will increase its temperature in the already hot border climate, deterring illegal crossings by burning the skin of those attempting to climb it, while also preventing rust on the steel structure. The initiative is part of a broader Trump administration effort to fortify the southern border, supported by approximately $46 billion allocated for wall completion and enhanced technology like cameras and sensors. This measure revives and expands past efforts from Trump's first term, when some sections were painted black but the project was halted to expedite construction. Critics labeled the move as emblematic of a harsh immigration enforcement approach that could harm families and economies on both sides of the border. Supporters emphasize that the U.S. now has the most secure border in its history, with claims of zero illegal crossings recorded during recent months amid increased troop deployments and military control of certain border areas.
